New Delhi/Imphal, July 31 (NationPress) In a significant development, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has apprehended a principal conspirator involved in the brutal murder case from last year in the Jiribam district of Manipur, according to a statement from the central investigative agency on Thursday.
On November 11 of the previous year, militants abducted and cruelly killed three women and three children in the Borebekra region of Jiribam.
The remains were later discarded in the Barak river.
NIA sources confirmed on Thursday that the suspect, Thanglienlal Hmar, known by the alias Boya, a resident of Moinathol Dilkshosh Ghaat in Cachar district, southern Assam, was arrested by a combined team of the NIA and Assam Police from Assam.
The six victims, which included a 10-month-old infant, were all part of the non-tribal Meitei community.
A mobile phone and a SIM card were found in the possession of the accused by the NIA.
Investigations have shown that Boya played a crucial role in planning and carrying out this heinous crime.
The NIA has taken over the investigation from the Borebekra police in Manipur and is actively pursuing the case.
The bullet-riddled remains of the victims were discovered on different occasions in the Barak river, near the Manipur-Assam border, in November.
Additionally, two more civilians lost their lives, and numerous houses were set ablaze during the attack.
The incident on November 11, 2024, led to widespread unrest across multiple districts in Manipur, including Jiribam, which is adjacent to southern Assam.
Earlier this month, the Manipur High Court instructed the NIA to provide a “detailed progress report” regarding the Jiribam murders.
A bench comprising Chief Justice Kempaiah Somashekar and Justice Ahanthem Bimol Singh issued this directive following a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) submitted by Soram Tekendrajit.
The NIA stands as the principal counter-terrorism law enforcement body in India. Established in 2008, the NIA is responsible for investigating and addressing crimes related to terrorism, national security, and other threats that compromise the nation’s sovereignty and integrity.
Operating under the Ministry of Home Affairs, the agency's core mission is to investigate and prosecute crimes with national and international implications, particularly focusing on terrorism, insurgency, and other related issues.
