NIA sources disclosed that the suspect Nongthombam Meiraba, from Bishnupur district and linked to the banned insurgent group - United National Liberation Front (UNLF), was directly involved in the shooting of the victim, identified as Zosangkim.
The other suspect, Sagolsem Sanatomba also known as Surchandra Singh or Piba, from Thoubal district, is associated with the Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL), another insurgent faction in Manipur, and participated in the violent episode that transpired at Zairawn village.
Both individuals are currently in NIA custody until May 17 as investigations are ongoing.
In a separate incident, the NIA has apprehended a member of the militant group - Kangleipak Communist Party-People’s War Group (KCP-PWG) - linked to an abduction and murder case stemming from ethnic violence in Manipur during 2023.
According to sources from the central investigation agency, the KCP-PWG operative, identified as Waikhom Rohit Singh, residing in Thoubal Pakhangkhong Leirak, was arrested by an NIA team for his involvement in orchestrating and executing the crime.
He is currently in judicial custody after his NIA remand has concluded. In November 2023, a CRPF team on ‘naka duty’ in Kangchup Chingkhong area of Imphal West district intercepted a Bolero vehicle carrying five individuals from one of the two main communities involved in the ethnic strife.
A large and agitated crowd from the opposing community subsequently gathered and forcibly took away four of the individuals, with one managing to escape.
The bodies of three of the abducted individuals were later recovered. The NIA, which assumed control of this case in February 2024 under the directive of the Ministry of Home Affairs, is actively pursuing the investigation.
