New Delhi, Jan 10 (NationPress) The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has identified two additional suspects in the 2024 Assam Independence Day IED seizure case through a supplementary charge sheet submitted to a Special Court in Guwahati, as reported by an official on Saturday.
In the supplementary charge sheet presented to the NIA Special Court on Friday, the anti-terrorism agency has charged Bhargab Gogoi and Sumu Gogoi under several provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Explosive Substance Act, and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UA(P) Act).
With the addition of these two suspects, the total number of individuals charged in this case has now reached five. Previously, in June of last year, the NIA had filed charges against three others.
The recently named suspects, both from Dibrugarh district in Assam, were apprehended by the NIA in June 2025.
Initially, the NIA took over the investigation from the Dispur police in September 2024.
The investigations revealed that these two men had supplied funds to the already charged suspect Jahnu Boruah, who admitted to planting four of the 11 IEDs confiscated by the police in August 2024.
These IEDs were planted as part of a protest and a call to boycott Independence Day issued by ULFA(I) chief Paresh Baruah.
The Assam Police had originally registered the case concerning the ULFA(I) conspiracy to wage war against the Government of India through planned multiple IED blasts across Assam at Dispur police station.
After taking over the investigation in September 2024, the NIA had charged three individuals in June 2025 under various sections of the BNS, UA(P) Act, and the Explosive Substance Act.
The three previously charged individuals included Paresh Baruah (alias Paresh Asom, Kamruj Zaman Khan, Nur-uz-Zaman, Zaman Bhai, Pradip, Paban Baruah), who serves as the chairman and SS Commander-in-Chief of the banned terrorist group ULFA-I.
Additionally, the other two named in the charge sheet were Abhijit Gogoi (alias Abhijeet Gogoi, Aishang Asom) and Jahnu Boruah (alias Arnob Asom, Huntu).
Earlier this month, ULFA-I alleged that their Eastern headquarters in Myanmar was targeted by the Indian Army with drone strikes during the early hours, a claim that the Army has denied. The banned group stated in a press release that these cross-border operations resulted in the deaths of 19 of their cadres and injuries to another 19.
