Key Takeaways
Bhubaneswar, Feb 3 (NationPress) A local court in Bhubaneswar has pronounced a sentence of rigorous imprisonment for two years on nine Bangladeshi nationals for unlawfully entering India without possessing a passport, visa, or any valid travel documentation.
The court has additionally mandated that the convicted individuals pay a fine of Rs 10,000 each; failure to comply will result in an extra three months of rigorous imprisonment.
According to police sources, on March 8, 2025, the Special Task Force (STF) of Odisha Police detained ten Bangladeshi nationals, including a juvenile, at Bhubaneswar Railway Station based on credible information.
"During questioning, the individuals provided inconsistent statements and attempted to evade capture. Upon inquiry, they could not furnish a passport, visa, or any valid travel document. They admitted to entering India secretly without proper authorization, traversing through a jungle area of Assam under the cover of night," disclosed special public prosecutor RR Brahma.
These Bangladeshi nationals, who had clandestinely entered India without appropriate travel documents, were arrested by the STF after a case was registered.
Following a successful investigation, a charge sheet was filed on May 5 last year against the accused under Section 14 of the Foreigners Act, 1946, concerning violations of India’s immigration regulations. The prosecution presented six witnesses and submitted 14 pertinent documents during the trial.
Meanwhile, the juvenile involved in the case has been placed in a correctional facility in Berhampur as mandated by the Juvenile Justice Board, Bhubaneswar.
Significantly, the Odisha government has recently ramped up efforts to identify and deport Bangladeshi nationals who are residing illegally across various regions of the state.
In response to a question raised in the Odisha Assembly, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi stated in December 2025 that since the BJP-led government took office in June 2024, 51 Bangladeshi immigrants have been identified as living illegally in Odisha.
