Bhubaneswar, Dec 1 (NationPress) The government of Odisha has ramped up efforts to identify and deport Bangladeshi nationals who are unlawfully residing in various regions of the state.
During a session in the Odisha Assembly, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi disclosed on Monday that since the BJP-led administration came into power in June of the previous year, a total of 51 Bangladeshi immigrants have been recognized as living illegally in Odisha.
CM Majhi mentioned that following directives from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the Odisha Police initiated a comprehensive statewide operation to identify and remove illegal Bangladeshi immigrants by forming a Special Task Force (STF).
Additionally, two state-level and 18 district-level holding facilities have been set up to detain identified immigrants until they can be deported.
Recent operations by the Odisha Police led to the detention of 1,768 individuals under suspicion. Out of these, 1,667 individuals were released after verifying their documents, while 51 were confirmed as illegal Bangladeshi nationals.
The highest number of illegal immigrants were located in the Commissionerate Police jurisdiction, with 24 found in Bhubaneswar, 15 in Cuttack, and 6 in Berhampur.
The Odisha Police successfully facilitated the deportation of 49 illegal immigrants and arrested two more for acquiring Indian passports through fraudulent means.
Document verification is still ongoing for another 50 suspects to ascertain their residency status.
CM Majhi emphasized that District Superintendents of Police and other officials are being consistently instructed to persist with the detection initiative and ensure the prompt deportation of illegal immigrants.
Officials from the Intelligence Bureau and district-level units are actively participating in this special operation.
Furthermore, police have been tasked with uncovering the true identities of Bangladeshi immigrants by scrutinizing financial, communication, and news applications utilized by them.
Chief Minister Majhi highlighted that the detection and deportation initiative has been enhanced through collaboration with the Border Security Force (BSF), intelligence agencies from West Bengal, and the Union Home Ministry.
