Kolkata, Sep 23 (NationPress) Following a midnight cloudburst that caused significant damage in the city, the Met office has issued another warning for rainfall in Kolkata and the surrounding districts of south Bengal. This comes as a low pressure area develops in the Bay of Bengal, promising more heavy downpours in the upcoming days.
Additionally, another low pressure system is anticipated to form on September 25, which is expected to bring unwanted rainfall to Kolkata and south Bengal during the Durga Puja celebrations.
"The low pressure area that emerged over the northeast Bay of Bengal and its surroundings intensified on Monday morning. It is accompanied by a cyclonic circulation extending up to approximately 5.8 km above sea level, situated in the same region. The system is projected to move towards the northwest Bay of Bengal in the next 24 hours.
"As a result, several areas near the South 24 Parganas district and Kolkata have been experiencing heavy rainfall.
"The cloudburst in Kolkata caused significant disruption since last night, and rain is expected to persist throughout the day and into tomorrow," stated an official from the Regional Meteorological Centre in Kolkata.
Forecasts indicate a strong likelihood of another low pressure area forming over the east-central and adjacent north Bay of Bengal on Thursday, September 25.
"This low pressure area is predicted to move west-northwest and concentrate over the northwest and adjacent west-central Bay of Bengal, near the south Odisha-north Andhra Pradesh coast by Friday, September 26, potentially intensifying into a deep depression.
"Consequently, light to moderate rain, as well as heavy to very heavy rain, is expected across several districts in south Bengal and Kolkata," the Met department official added.
In light of the record overnight rainfall due to the cloudburst, Kolkata and its neighboring regions were inundated with knee-deep water on Tuesday, significantly disrupting daily activities. Reports indicate that at least seven individuals were electrocuted in the city.
The maximum temperature in Kolkata on Monday was 30.5 degrees Celsius, which is 2.3 degrees below normal, while the minimum temperature reached 27.1 degrees Celsius, slightly above the normal range.
