Shillong/Agartala, Dec 30 (NationPress) The North East Students' Organisation (NESO), a leading coalition representing eight significant student groups from the northeastern states, has urgently called for capital punishment for those involved in the tragic death of Tripura student Angel Chakma. He was viciously attacked in Dehradun and ultimately succumbed to his injuries at a hospital on December 26.

In a letter addressed to Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, NESO Chairman Samuel B. Jyrwa and Secretary General Mutsikhoyo Yhobu outlined a three-point demand that includes the prompt execution of justice against the offenders of this appalling act.

Moreover, NESO has advocated for the establishment of a specialized police station dedicated to addressing incidents of racial discrimination and violence against individuals from the northeastern states. They also urged the creation of a robust law against racial discrimination, termed the Anti-Racism Act.

In their correspondence, they requested the Chief Minister’s immediate intervention to implement measures to ensure mental, social, and physical safety for students and residents from the northeastern region in Dehradun and other areas of Uttarakhand.

Strongly denouncing such acts of violence against northeastern individuals, NESO emphasized that these forms of harassment have been recurrent across various parts of India, often leading to tragic outcomes.

Reports indicate that Chakma, a 24-year-old final-year MBA student from a university in Uttarakhand and son of a Border Security Force (BSF) constable, passed away on December 26 after a grueling 18-day battle for survival in a Dehradun hospital.

Originally from the Chakma tribal community, he suffered severe injuries following an attack by a group of assailants on December 9, who reportedly made racial slurs.

In the same incident, Angel’s brother Micheal Chakma, who was with him, also faced assault.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has communicated with his Uttarakhand counterpart Dhami on two occasions (December 27 and 29) concerning steps to ensure stringent action against the individuals responsible for the student’s death.

Dhami informed Saha that five suspects have been apprehended and are currently in judicial custody, with further investigations ongoing.

According to officials in Agartala, as per the Uttarakhand Police, the primary suspect fled to Nepal immediately after the incident.

Following directives from the Uttarakhand Chief Minister, a financial aid of ₹4,12,500 was sanctioned on Monday as the initial installment to Tarun Prasad Chakma, the father of Angel Chakma.

Furthermore, the Chief Minister assured the grieving father that all individuals connected to the incident would face justice and that the legal process would proceed accordingly.

This heinous act has ignited widespread outrage throughout the Northeastern region. Congress Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha and Assam MP Gaurav Gogoi, along with Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, and numerous organizations, condemned the assault, labeling it a “horrific hate crime” while demanding severe penalties for the offenders.

Leaders from the BJP's ally, Tipra Motha Party, including Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma, former Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh, Tripura's Congress state President Ashish Kumar Saha, the National People’s Party led by Meghalaya Chief Minister Sangma, the All India Chakma Students’ Union (AICSU), the Manipuri Students’ Federation, the Tripura’s Tribal Student Union, and many others have also vehemently criticized the killing and called for justice.

Various youth and student organizations organized candlelight vigils and protests in Agartala on Sunday and Monday to honor Angel Chakma and express their outrage over the brutal assault and subsequent death.

Angel Chakma's remains were brought back to Agartala on Saturday, and his last rites were conducted at his ancestral home in Machamara village of Unokoti district on Sunday.
