NPCI Enhances Commuter Experience with RuPay for 3.2 Million MTC Users in Chennai

Chennai, Jan 6 (NationPress) The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has joined forces with the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) to implement RuPay on-the-go, a contactless payment solution designed for transit.
This initiative will benefit over 3.2 million daily commuters utilizing Chennai MTC services.
RuPay on-the-go facilitates multi-modal ticket payments across Chennai Metro, MTC buses, and Chennai Metro parking facilities using a single card, effectively addressing challenges such as lengthy queues, the necessity for exact change, and complicated ticketing systems.
Launched under the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) programme, RuPay on-the-go streamlines public transit across various cities in India.
“By integrating the RuPay on-the-go card within the MTC bus network, Chennai is making a significant stride toward a smarter, more efficient urban mobility ecosystem,” stated Kunal Kalawatia, Chief of Products at NPCI.
This card provides travelers with a seamless, hassle-free, and contactless experience on both metros and buses, marked by the recognizable RuPay contactless symbol.
“The MTC Singara Chennai One City One Card is compatible with Chennai Metro Rail (CMRL), and similarly, the CMRL Singara Chennai One City One Card can be utilized within the MTC bus network,” NPCI confirmed.
“This collaboration signifies a transformative achievement for Chennai’s public transit system. By merging the RuPay on-the-go card with MTC buses and Chennai metro, we are delivering a seamless multi-modal travel experience for our passengers. We eagerly anticipate the positive effects this will have on the lives of Chennai’s citizens,” remarked Dr Alby John Varghese, Managing Director of MTC Chennai.
The RuPay on-the-go card is available not only in Chennai but also across an expanding network of transit services in cities such as Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, and Kanpur, as well as bus services in various locations.
Moreover, RuPay cards enable smooth transactions at merchant outlets and provide users the flexibility to make UPI payments by linking the card with UPI-enabled applications through RuPay Credit Cards on UPI.
