Bhubaneswar, Feb 10 (NationPress) The Odisha Sports and Youth Services Department has issued a show-cause letter to the Odisha Cricket Association (OCA) regarding the disruptions that occurred during the international cricket match between India and England at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on February 9, caused by a floodlight failure.
The Director of Sports, Siddhartha Das, has directed the Honorary Secretary of OCA to provide a comprehensive response within 10 days.
In the letter, Das noted that during the 2nd One Day International (ODI) match on Sunday, one floodlight unexpectedly ceased functioning, resulting in a disruption to the game.
This incident caused the match to be suspended for approximately 30 minutes, inconveniencing both players and fans.
“The Odisha Cricket Association (OCA) is instructed to furnish a detailed explanation regarding the cause of the disruption, identify individuals or agencies responsible for the lapse, and outline measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future. The findings must be submitted within 10 days of receiving this letter,” stated the Odisha Sports department.
Odisha Sports Minister Suryabanshi Suraj informed reporters that a written explanation has been requested from OCA, and appropriate action will be taken against those accountable for the unwarranted delay in resolving the technical issues following the floodlight failure during the match.
Additionally, senior Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader Lenin Mohanty has called for the resignation of the sports minister on moral grounds due to the mismanagement that occurred during the international match.
The BJD has also demanded stringent action against those found responsible for the incident.
It is important to note that the disruption occurred during the seventh over of India's innings when Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill were at the crease.
The floodlights began to flicker in the sixth over and completely went out in the seventh over.
On the other hand, OCA officials indicated that a generator at the stadium failed to operate, leading to the temporary loss of the floodlight.
They explained to the media that replacing the malfunctioning generator took time, as the backup generator could not arrive promptly.
