Odisha piped water for all villages by March 2027: Minister Naik
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Odisha Rural Development, Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water (PR&DW) Minister Rabi Narayan Naik on Thursday, 21 May reaffirmed the state government's resolve to extend piped drinking water coverage to every village in Odisha by March 2027, saying all requisite steps are being taken to meet the deadline. The minister spoke to reporters in Bhubaneswar after chairing a detailed review meeting at the Lok Seva Bhawan.
Progress on Mega Piped Water Supply Projects
Of 207 Mega Piped Water Supply Projects sanctioned across the state, 33 have already been commissioned, bringing piped water to 2,402 villages. An additional 14 projects are slated for completion by the end of May 2025, which will extend coverage to a further 1,331 villages.
Partial work has been finished in 35 other mega projects, through which piped water is currently reaching 3,210 villages. Cumulatively, 20,875 villages are now under piped water supply coverage, while another 7,042 villages receive water through stand-post systems.
Single Village Schemes and Solar Projects
Beyond the mega projects, the state has completed 18,552 Single Village Schemes (SVS) to deliver safe drinking water in rural pockets. Alongside these, 6,369 solar-powered piped water supply projects have been commissioned in various parts of Odisha, reinforcing supply in off-grid and remote areas.
Emergency and Summer Measures
To address water scarcity, the government has approved 37,876 tube wells across different regions since 2024. This summer, 629 water tankers have been deployed in water-stressed areas to maintain uninterrupted supply. The department has also opened 8,281 temporary water kiosks, locally called Jalachhatras, in rural areas during the summer season to bridge immediate gaps.
What Comes Next
With the March 2027 target now under active monitoring, the government's focus will shift to accelerating the remaining mega projects and ensuring last-mile connectivity to villages not yet covered. The pace of completions in the coming months will be critical to determining whether Odisha can fulfil its universal piped water pledge on schedule.
