Bhubaneswar, Oct 6 (NationPress) In a significant operation, the Bargarh police have dismantled an interstate gang engaged in the illicit trade of drugs and arms, as stated by Superintendent of Police Prahalad Sahai Meena on Monday.
Acting on reliable intelligence regarding the transport, possession, and distribution of illegal cough syrup and weapons, a comprehensive operation was initiated under the direct guidance of the Bargarh SP.
The Bargarh police organized seven teams consisting of officers from Attabira, Rural, Sadar, Town, Bijepur Police Stations, and the Special Squad, who conducted simultaneous raids at various locations throughout the district.
As a result of these operations, law enforcement apprehended 15 suspects, including three individuals from neighboring Chhattisgarh, eight from the Bargarh district, and one each from Balangir, Jagatsinghpur, Jajpur, and Kendrapara districts in Odisha.
The authorities seized 1500 bottles of Eskuf Cough Syrup (100 ml each), five homemade pistols with magazines, 20 rounds of live ammunition, three empty cartridge cases, 16 mobile devices, five vehicles, and cash totaling Rs 57,200 from the detained individuals.
The Bargarh SP disclosed that the suspects are affiliated with an interstate criminal organization involved in the illegal drug and arms trade across Odisha and its neighboring states.
Moreover, he mentioned that a further investigation is in progress to trace the larger network of this interstate gang and identify their suppliers, accomplices, and distribution channels.
The misuse of Eskuf cough syrup has become a serious issue across India, mainly due to its codeine content, which is an opioid recognized for its addictive nature.
Law enforcement agencies have repeatedly uncovered illegal networks involved in cough syrup trafficking, seizing substantial amounts during various operations.
Notably, a joint operation in July by the Special Task Force (STF) of the Odisha Crime Branch and the Drugs Control Department in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack resulted in the confiscation of cough syrup valued at over Rs 1 crore.
