Bhubaneswar, Aug 19 (NationPress) The political landscape in Odisha has become increasingly charged following the announcement from the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) regarding the commencement of the Systematic Improvement of Records (SIR) for the voter’s list in the state, set to begin shortly.
In response, Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader Lenin Mohanty remarked that although the announcement has been made, the specifics and procedures for its execution are still under consideration.
Consequently, the party has asserted that it would be premature to draw any conclusions at this stage. The BJD emphasized that its leader, Opposition Leader Naveen Patnaik, firmly believes that no eligible voter should be excluded from the electoral roll, ensuring every citizen's inclusion.
The party further clarified that it would take a definitive position on the SIR process only after the Election Commission releases comprehensive guidelines.
Simultaneously, the BJD expressed its strong disagreement with the comments made by Odisha Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan, who claimed that the SIR initiative would bolster transparency and credibility within the democratic framework.
The party contended that no minister should represent the Election Commission, proposing that the commission appoint its own Public Relations Officer for such communications.
Labeling the Law Minister’s comments as “shocking,” the BJD stressed that it would evaluate the SIR process only after the Election Commission makes its formal announcement and elucidates the procedures, always prioritizing the nation's and voters' interests.
Recently, Odisha CEO R.S. Gopalan announced that the SIR of the voter list will be executed across Odisha.
This marks the first SIR to be conducted in Odisha in 24 years, with the previous exercise having taken place in 2002. Gopalan noted that the final voter list is scheduled to be published on January 7 next year, following the revision process.
