Bhubaneswar, Oct 20 (NationPress) The leading opposition party, Biju Janata Dal (BJD), has announced its candidate for the upcoming by-election in Nuapada, Odisha. Snehangini Chhuria officially submitted her nomination papers on Monday.
Accompanied by prominent BJD figures such as Pramila Mallik, Tukuni Sahoo, Lekhasri Samantsinghar, and numerous party activists and supporters, Chhuria visited the Sub Collector's office in Nuapada to present her nomination documents to the returning officer.
After completing her nomination process, Chhuria addressed the media, stating: “With the blessings of our former Chief Minister and BJD president Naveen Patnaik, I have filed my nomination papers for the Nuapada by-election today. I express my heartfelt thanks to my leader, Naveen Patnaik, and to all the women, elders, youth, and BJD supporters from Nuapada who came out in large numbers to back my candidacy.”
She emphasized that the party aims to gain votes by showcasing the shortcomings of the current BJP-led government while highlighting the achievements of the Naveen Patnaik-led BJD government in the past.
Chhuria also mentioned that individuals across various social segments, including Dalits, tribals, and OBCs, are disillusioned with the BJP’s governance and are reminiscing about the successes of the previous BJD administration under Patnaik.
Expressing optimism about the BJD's chances in the forthcoming bypolls, she remarked: “The people of Nuapada have welcomed us with open hearts; our path to victory will be successful, and the BJD will secure the seat with everyone's blessings.”
On Saturday, candidates from both the Congress and the ruling BJP—Ghasiram Majhi and Jay Dholakia, respectively—also filed their nominations.
The BJD has nominated Chhuria, a two-term MLA from the Attabira Assembly constituency in Bargarh district, following Jay Dholakia's switch to the BJP. Dholakia is the son of the late four-term Nuapada MLA and BJD leader Rajendra Dholakia.
The Nuapada Assembly seat became vacant after the death of Rajendra Dholakia on September 8. The by-election for this constituency is set to take place on November 11.
