Odisha Vigilance raids Agriculture official Prasanna Kumar Patra, unearths crores in assets
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Odisha Vigilance on Friday, 9 October 2026, conducted simultaneous searches at eight locations linked to Prasanna Kumar Patra, Deputy Director, Soil Conservation-cum-Project Director, Watershed, Sundargarh district, in connection with allegations of possessing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income. The raids, spanning premises in Bhubaneswar, Sundargarh, and Cuttack, turned up movable and immovable assets reportedly worth several crores.
Scale of the Operation
Eight coordinated teams from Odisha Vigilance — led by one Additional Superintendent of Police, four Deputy Superintendents of Police, 13 Inspectors, five Assistant Sub-Inspectors, and supporting staff — executed the searches on the strength of warrants issued by the Court of the Special Judge, Vigilance, Sundargarh. The agency confirmed in an official statement: 'On Friday, on the allegation of possession of disproportionate assets (DA) by Prasanna Kumar Patra... simultaneous house searches are being conducted by Odisha Vigilance.'
Assets Unearthed So Far
Vigilance officials found Patra and his family members allegedly in possession of four double-storeyed buildings, a 3-BHK flat in Bhubaneswar, and seven high-value plots on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar. The registered sale deed value of the plots stands at approximately ₹1 crore, though the agency suspects their actual market value is significantly higher.
Beyond immovable property, officials also recovered gold weighing 212 gm, cash of around ₹1.30 lakh, bank and financial deposits totalling approximately ₹1.46 crore, three two-wheelers, and household articles valued at ₹7.72 lakh. Additionally, Patra had reportedly paid an advance of ₹29.50 lakh to a realtor for purchasing another flat in Bhubaneswar. The Vigilance Technical Wing is currently carrying out measurement, valuation, and full assessment of all properties.
Who Is Prasanna Kumar Patra
Patra joined government service on 19 December 1995 as a Junior Soil Conservation Officer in the office of the Director, Soil Conservation, Bhubaneswar — a career spanning nearly three decades in the state's Agriculture and Farmers' Empowerment Department. He was promoted to the rank of Deputy Director, Soil Conservation, in 2024 and posted to Kandhamal, where he served from August 2024 to April 2025. Since April 2025, he has been posted as Deputy Director, Soil Conservation, in the office of the Project Director, Watershed, Sundargarh.
What Comes Next
Odisha Vigilance officials stated that more assets are expected to surface as searches remain ongoing. The Technical Wing's valuation report will be critical in formally quantifying the alleged disproportionate wealth before any formal chargesheet. This comes amid a broader pattern of Vigilance crackdowns on mid- and senior-level government officials in Odisha, with several such raids conducted across departments over the past year. The case will likely be referred to the Special Vigilance Court for further proceedings once the assessment is complete.
