Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bhubaneswar, Jan 13 (NationPress) The Chief Secretary of Odisha, Anu Garg, emphasized the need for flawless execution during this year's Rath Yatra on Tuesday. She directed senior officials from various departments to ensure that all assigned responsibilities are executed without any errors.
In the initial preparatory meeting for the upcoming Rath Yatra, scheduled for July 16, CS Garg urged officials to draw lessons from past experiences, engage in advance planning, and foster inter-departmental coordination to guarantee a well-organized and error-free event.
During this meeting, the Chief Secretary outlined a range of rituals and activities, which include gathering wood for the chariots, constructing the chariots, and the chariot pulling ceremony.
Since the Rath Yatra in Puri attracts millions of devotees annually, effective coordination is vital for the smooth management of the event.
With the Rath Yatra just six months away, the Chief Secretary provided essential guidance during the meeting to ensure that all preparations are completed on time, aiming for an incident-free event.
Officials engaged in comprehensive discussions about the collection of wood logs for chariot construction, the deployment of additional police, traffic management, security personnel, enhanced LED TVs, continuous water supply, parking arrangements, and other logistics necessary for this year's Rath Yatra to maintain crowd control and uphold law and order.
It is worth noting that last year's Rath Yatra was marred by severe mismanagement and significant lapses, including a tragic stampede near the Gundicha Temple on June 29, 2025, resulting in the death of three pilgrims in Puri.
In the aftermath of this tragic incident, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi issued an apology to Lord Jagannath's devotees and mandated an immediate investigation into the security shortcomings.
The Odisha government responded decisively by removing Puri District Collector Siddharth Shankar Swain and Superintendent of Police Vinit Agrawal from their positions.
Additionally, two senior police officials, DCP Vishnu Pati and Commandant Ajay Padhee, have been suspended for negligence. The government also swiftly announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 25 lakhs each for the families of the deceased pilgrims.
