Patna, Feb 7 (NationPress) Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla expressed deep concern on Saturday regarding the diminishing dignity and decorum within legislative assemblies, describing it as a significant issue for elected officials across the spectrum. His comments were made during a gathering at the Bihar Legislature, shortly after recent disruptions during the Budget Session of Parliament, where the Opposition compelled multiple adjournments.

Birla underscored the importance of preserving the sanctity of legislative institutions, asserting that upholding the dignity and decorum of the House is a core responsibility for all public representatives.

The Speaker emphasized that the Legislature is a crucial entity in a democracy and its dignity should be respected at all times. He voiced his concern over the frequent occurrences of disruption and disorderly behavior in legislative sessions, noting that such actions negatively impact the image of democratic institutions.

Birla encouraged members to focus more on dialogue, rational debate, and constructive engagement. He pointed out that criticism should be oriented around policy, based on facts, and aimed at benefiting the public.

During his opening address at the event titled “Empowered Legislators, Stronger Democracy,” commemorating the foundation day of the Bihar Legislative Assembly, Birla remarked that empowered legislators are fundamental to a robust democracy. He noted that the strength of democracy is directly tied to the capacity, competence, and integrity of its elected representatives.

He further observed that democratic institutions gain their effectiveness not only from constitutional mandates but also from how public representatives carry out their duties. A legislator's strength, he noted, comes from the trust and confidence they earn from the populace.

By addressing public issues, voicing citizens’ concerns, and striving to resolve these through legislative frameworks, legislators play a pivotal role in fortifying democracy.

Birla outlined that the empowerment of legislators is rooted in their ability to comprehend public needs, engage effectively in legislative processes, and contribute positively to policy development.

He stressed that legislators who are knowledgeable about parliamentary procedures are better equipped to make impactful contributions and ensure transparency and accountability in governance.

Additionally, Birla inaugurated the National e-Vidhan Application (NeVA) Digital House within the Bihar Legislature, highlighting its importance as a significant milestone toward enhancing transparency and efficiency.
