New Delhi, July 17 (NationPress) The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) has entered a significant memorandum of understanding (MoU) with bp India to explore new opportunities in India’s hydrocarbon sector. This agreement aims to facilitate deeper exploration within India’s upstream sector.
The collaboration focuses on drilling stratigraphic wells in various offshore sedimentary basins classified as Category II and III, including Andaman, Mahanadi, Saurashtra, and Bengal, as stated by ONGC in a release on X.
According to the state-run firm, “This partnership will enhance geological understanding and unlock untapped hydrocarbon potential, thereby bolstering India’s long-term energy security.”
The MoU was formalized with the presence of Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri during the ‘Urja Varta 2025’ event, highlighting the government's commitment to fostering global partnerships in India’s energy landscape.
ONGC remarked, “Global expertise meets national ambition, paving the way for an Atmanirbhar Bharat.”
This collaboration signifies a progressive step towards energy security and the discovery of unexplored reserves, as noted by bp India.
Kartikeya Dube, Head of Country for bp India, expressed enthusiasm regarding the project’s national significance, stating, “We are eager to strengthen our existing alliance with ONGC. We believe that drilling new stratigraphic wells will be immensely beneficial and could lead to a fresh understanding of potential reserves. bp’s expertise in deep-water exploration, paired with advanced seismic technologies, will greatly aid in the evaluation and drilling processes.”
Minister Puri, at the gathering, expressed optimism that the new hydrocarbon exploration initiative in India could uncover several substantial oilfields akin to those in Guyana, particularly in the Andaman Sea.
“We are committed to providing explorers with high-quality data, financial incentives, a stable regulatory environment, and streamlined business operations to position India as the next global hub for oil and gas exploration and production,” Puri remarked.
The ‘Urja Varta 2025’ initiative is designed to shape the future of India’s energy sector while reinforcing the nation’s commitment to sustainability and innovation.
