New Delhi, Aug 18 (NationPress) The Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day on Monday, as persistent interruptions by Opposition leaders thwarted a planned special discussion on Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla’s groundbreaking space mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS).
This session aimed to honor India’s advancing space endeavors and Shukla’s return but was overshadowed by chants and protests in the Well of the House from Opposition members.
The day commenced with significant excitement as Parliament geared up to pay tribute to Shukla, the first Indian astronaut in over forty years, who conducted research and engaged in more than 60 scientific experiments during his 18-day mission on the ISS as part of NASA’s Axiom-4 mission.
The discussion was entitled “India’s First Astronaut Aboard the International Space Station — Critical Role of Space Programme for Viksit Bharat by 2047”, aimed at underscoring India’s strategic objectives in space exploration, including the forthcoming 'Gaganyaan' human spaceflight mission.
As the House reconvened, Speaker Om Birla took the chair and urged members to initiate the discussion. Minister of State for Science and Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh, expressed regret over the Opposition’s unwillingness to engage, stating, “You may have disagreements with the government or the BJP, but this is about an astronaut and Air Force officer who has made the nation proud. At least show encouragement to our scientists and astronauts.”
He also mentioned that as a doctor, he understood the circumstances, acknowledging that all Opposition members are frustrated.
Despite repeated requests from Dilip Saikia, who was managing the proceedings, urging decorum to allow the debate to move forward, Opposition members continued to shout slogans, wave placards, and congest the Well.
Saikia reminded them, “Every day you come with posters and banners. The entire nation is watching. This is a moment of pride for 140 crore Indians, yet you do not wish to deliberate on such a crucial issue.”
The ongoing disruption led to the Chair adjourning the House for the day, leaving the special discussion unresolved.
Shubhanshu Shukla, who returned to India on August 17 and is set to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi later on Monday, has emerged as a symbol of India’s space ambitions.
This adjournment highlights the increasing political divide in Parliament, even on issues of national pride and scientific accomplishment. The missed chance to celebrate Shukla’s milestone has drawn criticism from various political factions and the scientific community.
