Opposition Leaders Should Acknowledge CM Sarma for Beef Ban: Assam BJP President

Guwahati, Dec 5 (NationPress) Assam BJP president Bhabhesh Kalita remarked on Thursday that opposition leaders ought to acknowledge the ruling party's initiative to prohibit beef in the state.
“Rakibul Hussain raised the beef issue during the election campaign, accusing us of distributing beef to gain votes. This claim did not resonate well with the electorate, leading to Congress' dismal performance in the Samaguri assembly by-election,” he informed the media.
He further emphasized that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was prompt in countering the Congress's false narrative.
“CM Sarma challenged the Congress leaders to formally propose a ban on public beef consumption, yet they did not follow through. Conversely, the Chief Minister thoroughly discussed the matter during a cabinet meeting and declared a ban on consuming beef in public places throughout the state. Henceforth, the issue of beef consumption cannot be leveraged in elections,” Kalita stated.
On Wednesday, Sarma conducted a virtual cabinet meeting from the national capital to make a pivotal decision concerning the beef consumption ban in Assam.
“Previously, we had prohibited beef consumption within a five-kilometre radius of temples and other places of worship. Now, we have decided to extend this restriction, instituting a comprehensive ban on beef consumption in public places starting today,” he announced.
He mentioned that this ban also encompasses serving beef in hotels, restaurants, and at any community celebrations within the state.
“Individuals who violate this ban will face penalties in accordance with existing laws,” the Chief Minister asserted.
Sarma also directed criticism towards the Congress party, stating: “Certain Congress leaders, including the state president, have discussed banning beef consumption in the state. While we already had a stringent law on this matter, it was thoroughly discussed in today’s cabinet meeting, resulting in a comprehensive ban on beef consumption in public places across the state.”
