Lok Sabha MP Calls for Accountability Amid Oracle Layoffs
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 2 (NationPress) CPI-MLL MP Raja Ram Singh expressed strong disapproval on Thursday regarding the recent reports of mass layoffs at Oracle Corporation. He emphasized that workers must not be regarded as expendable and called on the government to take swift measures to safeguard employees' rights and promote accountability within the IT industry.
In a letter to the Union Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, Singh, who represents the Karakat constituency in the Lok Sabha, voiced his deep concern and outrage over news that the multinational tech giant had terminated nearly 12,000 employees across the country.
He labeled this action as a significant threat to job security, raising questions about corporate accountability and the government’s response to such alarming trends.
Singh pointed out that firms like Oracle greatly benefit from India's supportive policy environment, including tax incentives, public infrastructure, and favorable business conditions.
He stressed that these advantages are granted with the expectation that companies will actively contribute to job creation and economic stability.
“Firing thousands of workers without sufficient notice is a violation of fundamental principles of job security and human dignity,” he stated.
“After such abrupt terminations, who will be responsible for the livelihoods of those affected and the well-being of the numerous families left in distress?” Singh questioned.
He further remarked that widespread layoffs, particularly when executed without proper notice, jeopardize this implicit social contract and erode the foundation of secure and dignified employment.
In his correspondence, Singh urged the ministry to demand a comprehensive explanation from Oracle regarding the extent and methodology of these layoffs.
“Implement necessary measures to prevent arbitrary mass layoffs and ensure accountability for any breaches of labour laws,” he advocated.
“The dignity of work cannot be compromised. The government must take a strong stance to guarantee that workers in India are not treated as disposable,” Singh emphasized.
