Key Takeaways
PatNew Delhi, April 2 (NationPress) CPI-ML MP Raja Ram Singh on Thursday called upon Labour and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya to take action regarding the recent mass layoffs at a private IT firm in India.
In a letter directed to the Union Minister, Singh expressed his profound concern and indignation over the reports indicating that close to 12,000 employees have lost their jobs.
He highlighted that such measures pose serious questions regarding corporate responsibility and the government's duty to protect workers' rights and dignity.
Singh pointed out that companies functioning in India benefit from substantial tax breaks, public infrastructure, and a supportive policy framework from both central and state authorities.
“These advantages are granted with the expectation that firms will create jobs and contribute to economic stability. However, unjust and extensive layoffs violate this social contract and weaken the very foundations of dignified employment,” he noted.
He further condemned the way the layoffs were reportedly executed, asserting that dismissing thousands of employees with minimal or no notice infringes on essential principles of job security and human dignity.
“After being abruptly terminated, who will take accountability for the livelihoods and well-being of the numerous families impacted?” Singh questioned.
He also accused the government of failing to act in such situations, sending a message that labor protections in India can be compromised.
In his correspondence, Singh demanded that the Ministry obtain an immediate and thorough explanation from the company concerning the reasons, extent, and methodology of the layoffs.
He called for prompt measures to avert arbitrary mass terminations and ensure strict accountability for any infractions of labor laws.
“The dignity of labor cannot be undermined. The government must firmly ensure that workers in India are not treated as disposable,” he asserted.
Raja Ram Singh is a notable figure in the Communist Party of India-Marxist–Leninist Liberation from Bihar.
He was elected to the Lok Sabha in 2024 from the Karakat parliamentary constituency, where he achieved a significant victory over independent candidate Pawan Singh and Upendra Kushwaha, head of the Rashtriya Lok Morcha.
