He promptly consulted with administrative officials and refinery leaders to evaluate the ongoing situation. Officials have confirmed that the incident is now under control.
CM Sharma remarked, “The fire incident at the HPCL Rajasthan Refinery in Pachpadra is truly regrettable. I have held immediate discussions with administrative officials and the refinery management to gather comprehensive information regarding the circumstances.”
“At this moment, the situation is entirely under control. Emphasizing safety standards as a priority, the Prime Minister’s planned visit has been postponed for the time being. A high-level inquiry into the incident has been ordered,” he stated, noting that the significant inauguration of the refinery—seen as a beacon of hope for the region—will be rescheduled with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a later date.
A fire erupted on Monday afternoon at the HPCL Rajasthan Refinery in Pachpadra, situated in Balotra district, causing the planned inauguration by PM Modi to be postponed.
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) confirmed that the dedication ceremony, initially set for April 21, has been delayed due to this incident.
The ministry stated, “Due to an unfortunate fire incident today near the Crude Distillation Unit at the HRRL refinery, the dedication of the refinery by the Prime Minister on April 21, 2026, has been postponed. The fire has been managed, and fortunately, there are no casualties. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the incident.”
Initial reports indicate that the fire ignited around 2 p.m. following an explosion within an exchanger in the CDU-VDU (Crude and Vacuum Distillation Unit) section of the refinery. The flames spread swiftly, causing alarm among the employees and officials present.
Emergency measures were immediately enacted, with evacuation protocols instituted as a precaution. All personnel were safely evacuated, and no injuries or fatalities have been reported.
Local authorities and emergency services acted quickly. Fire engines, many already stationed nearby due to the Prime Minister’s scheduled visit, were rapidly dispatched to combat the fire.
Firefighters battled the flames for nearly two hours, successfully bringing the situation under control. Cooling operations and safety evaluations are currently ongoing.
Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot described the event as “extremely unfortunate.” In a post on X, he conveyed his concerns, emphasizing that the refinery is a source of pride for the state and expressed his hopes for the safety of all individuals involved.
Authorities have launched an investigation to uncover the precise cause of the fire and to enforce essential safety protocols. A new date for the refinery's inauguration—a significant development project and emblem of progress for the local populace—will be announced in due time.
