Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bhopal, April 19 (NationPress) The esteemed Padma Shri recipient, Bhagwandas Raikwar, affectionately known as “Dau”, has passed away at the age of 83 at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Bhopal on Saturday evening. He departed at approximately 9:30 p.m. following a lengthy struggle with a respiratory ailment, leaving the sports and cultural community of Madhya Pradesh, particularly in the Bundelkhand area, enveloped in sorrow.
A true representative of Bundelkhand, Bhagwandas Raikwar devoted his life to safeguarding and advancing the traditional “akhada” culture and the ancient martial art of “lathi” fighting.
In 1964, he utilized his modest personal finances to establish the historic “Chhatrasal Bundelkhand Akhada” located in Sagar, Madhya Pradesh. Over the years, he trained more than a thousand students in traditional weaponry and self-defense methods, elevating the “Bundeli” combat art to international recognition just as the tradition was on the brink of fading away.
For his enduring contributions to sports and culture, the Central government honored him with the prestigious Padma Shri award this year on January 25 in the sports category.
The Chief Minister, Mohan Yadav, expressed his condolences, stating, “The news of Shri Bhagwandas Raikwar ji’s passing, who brought global acclaim to Bundeli Martial Arts and was honored with the ‘Padma Shri’, is profoundly saddening. A humble tribute to him. May God provide peace to his departed soul and strength to his grieving family.”
As his health declined, Dau received initial treatment locally in Sagar. However, as his condition deteriorated, he was transferred to AIIMS Bhopal on April 7 and placed on ventilator support. Despite the diligent efforts of medical professionals, he could not be saved. His body was taken to Naryawali Naka Muktidham, where he was accorded state honors during the final rites.
