Amaravati, May 31 (NationPress) Andhra Pradesh's Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan raised concerns on Saturday regarding the inaction of the West Bengal Police against Trinamool Congress leaders whom he accused of ridiculing Sanatana Dharma.
His comments followed the arrest of Sharmistha Panoli, a law student, by West Bengal Police due to her controversial social media post. The leader of the Jana Sena Party urged the West Bengal authorities to ensure fairness in their actions.
Pawan Kalyan expressed his views on X, questioning the police's decision-making.
On Friday, Kolkata Police apprehended the 22-year-old law student at her residence in Gurugram over an allegedly offensive social media post.
“During Operation Sindoor, Sharmistha made comments that were regrettable and hurtful to many. She acknowledged her error, retracted the video, and apologized. The police acted promptly in her case. However, what about the immense pain caused to countless individuals when elected officials from TMC mock Sanatana Dharma? Where is the public outrage when our faith is demeaned as 'Ganda Dharm'? Why haven’t they apologized or faced swift consequences? Blasphemy should never go unchallenged!” Pawan Kalyan stated.
“Secularism must not serve as a protection for some while being a weapon for others. It ought to be equitable for all. West Bengal Police, the nation is observing. Act justly!” he further stated.
Pawan Kalyan shared a brief video clip of Mamata Banerjee, West Bengal's Chief Minister, addressing an Eid gathering in Kolkata in March.
During her address, the Trinamool Congress leader criticized the BJP, labeling it as the architect of a 'Ganda Dharm' (dirty religion).
She referred to the BJP as a 'jumla' party, asserting her disbelief in the 'Ganda Dharm' it has purportedly created, claiming it contradicts 'Hindu Dharm'.
On Friday, Kolkata Police arrested Sharmistha at her Gurugram home due to her objectionable social media activity.
On Saturday, she was presented in an Alipore court and was placed in judicial custody until June 13.
Kolkata Police initiated a case after receiving a complaint from one Wajahat Khan on May 14.
AIMIM spokesperson Waris Pathan accused Sharmistha of disrespecting Islam and attempting to incite communal discord.
On May 16, she issued an apology via a post on X, clarifying that she never intended to offend anyone.
