Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan on Tuesday, 16 June publicly condemned comments made by YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) leader and former minister Gudivada Amarnath targeting state Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha, calling the remarks demeaning to all women. The Jana Sena Party chief made his position clear through a post on social media, drawing a firm line between legitimate policy criticism and personal attacks on a woman's appearance and attire.

What Pawan Kalyan Said

Without directly naming Amarnath, the Deputy Chief Minister described the former minister's comments as objectionable and said they went beyond acceptable political discourse. Pawan Kalyan stated: 'We condemn these remarks. Members of that leader's party have stooped to the level of commenting on women's attire and appearance. One must exercise caution when speaking about women. Such comments do not merely target Smt. Anitha; they demean all women. It should not be forgotten that civil society closely monitors every word uttered by those in public life.'

He further drew a clear distinction between policy-based criticism and personal attacks, adding: 'Politics inevitably involves criticism and counter-criticism; however, these should remain focused on policy. If a specific policy is disliked, the criticism should be directed at that policy itself.'

Advice to Alliance Leaders

Pawan Kalyan also directed a pointed suggestion at fellow leaders within the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) coalition in Andhra Pradesh, urging them to respond firmly but with measured language. 'All alliance leaders should respond firmly using language that civil society appreciates. The alliance has no need for the kind of crude language and baseless comments employed by the opposing party,' he said.

The remark reflects a broader concern within the coalition about not descending to the level of the opposition even while rebutting its attacks — a calibrated political stance ahead of what is expected to be a charged legislative session.

Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha belongs to the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), which leads the ruling coalition. TDP state president and Gajuwaka MLA Palla Srinivasa Rao described Amarnath's remarks as deeply offensive, misogynistic, and unbecoming of democratic discourse. He demanded that Amarnath withdraw his comments and issue an unconditional apology to Anitha and to women across the state.

Srinivasa Rao argued that while political criticism is an accepted feature of democracy, personal attacks targeting a woman's appearance, attire, grooming, or personal choices represent a dangerous decline in political standards — a view echoed by multiple TDP leaders.
