Kolkata, May 31 (NationPress) The Shri Ram Swabhiman Parishad has shown unwavering support for Sharmistha Panoli, a law student and social media influencer recently detained by Kolkata Police for reportedly offending religious sentiments through her posts regarding Operation Sindoor.

Suraj Kumar Singh, Secretary of the Parishad, spoke to a crowd outside Alipur Court, denouncing the arrest and emphasizing the organization's dedication to Sharmistha's safety and the pursuit of justice.

In an interview with IANS, he stated that despite her public apology, she continued to endure threats and was unjustly targeted.

Singh remarked, "Sharmistha made a statement that ignited controversy. She later apologized unconditionally. Nonetheless, individuals linked with the Sky Foundation, based in Karachi, Pakistan, filed FIRs against her and called for her arrest. They even issued death threats, chanting slogans like 'Sar Tan Se Juda'."

He further criticized the West Bengal government's response to the situation, asserting, "If she has indeed broken Section 295A of BNS, then legal procedures should follow. However, as Hindus and members of our organization, we stand by her. Should anything happen to her, Mamata Banerjee's police will be held accountable. West Bengal has turned into a sanctuary for those who insult Hindus while targeting our own people."

Singh also demanded an investigation into the Sky Foundation, insisting, "This organization, registered in Karachi, is functioning here. Their operations should be scrutinized. We will ensure Sharmistha's safety and support her family and legal team."

Earlier, Panoli was apprehended in Gurugram and subsequently transported to Kolkata on transit remand. She was presented at Alipur Court and placed in judicial custody for 13 days.

An FIR against her was filed at Garden Reach Police Station on May 15 for posting an Instagram video that allegedly offended religious sentiments.

Despite removing the video and issuing a public apology, she faced threats and was ultimately arrested. This case has ignited extensive discussion over freedom of expression and the management of sensitive topics on social media.
