He emphasized the media’s crucial role as the fourth pillar of democracy, characterizing journalists as the vigilant guardians of society and the genuine voice of the populace. Sonowal pointed out that the press holds a significant duty in upholding freedom of expression and reinforcing democratic principles amidst a rapidly changing information landscape.

“The media’s role as society’s conscious overseer is invaluable. As the voice of the community, journalists have tirelessly fought to protect freedom of speech and ensure accountability,” Sonowal conveyed to the attendees.

Stressing the importance of responsible journalism, he encouraged media professionals to emphasize truth, credibility, and ethical reporting, while resisting the temptations of misinformation and sensationalism. Sonowal remarked that journalism should serve as a bridge between the government and the populace, magnifying public issues while fostering social unity.

The minister also highlighted the significance of collaboration, dialogue, and consensus-building, asserting that the media can significantly contribute to societal strength through constructive dialogue rather than conflict.

Sonowal acknowledged that the evolving challenges faced by journalists necessitate ongoing capacity development, professional integrity, and adaptability to new technologies, all while remaining committed to public interest journalism.

Earlier, Sonowal participated in a program for the foundation stone laying and inauguration of various welfare initiatives and engaged with beneficiaries of the Prime Minister’s flagship welfare programs. He also interacted with local entrepreneurs, recognizing their contributions to the local economy.
