Is It Just to Remove Eligible Voters from Electoral Rolls? Sachin Pilot Questions
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Jaipur, Jan 21 (NationPress) Sachin Pilot, the National General Secretary of Congress, former Deputy Chief Minister of Rajasthan, and MLA from Tonk, articulated on Wednesday that it is unjust and unacceptable to remove the names of eligible voters from electoral rolls. He emphasized that the Election Commission of India has the constitutional duty to protect the voting rights of every citizen.
During a gathering of Congress party Booth Level Officers (BLOs) tasked with oversight during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Tonk, Pilot asserted that the Election Commission must ensure that no eligible citizen is deprived of their right to vote under any circumstances.
“The right to vote is our most significant democratic asset, and any attempt to undermine it will not be tolerated,” he stated.
Pilot raised alarm over reports from various regions indicating that BLOs face undue pressure to manipulate electoral rolls for political gain. He claimed this pressure has fostered a climate of fear and anxiety among election officials, to the point of forcing some BLOs into extreme actions.
“This is a critical issue that requires sensitivity and accountability,” he remarked.
Addressing alleged discrepancies in electoral rolls, Pilot noted that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has previously presented evidence on these matters, adding that recent occurrences during the Bihar elections have cast doubts on the impartiality and effectiveness of the Election Commission.
“In such scenarios, it becomes increasingly vital for citizens and political activists to stay vigilant to uphold the integrity of the electoral process,” he pointed out.
Pilot commended the efforts of BLOs in Tonk, recognizing their bravery, patience, determination, and vigilance during the ongoing revision process.
“Our task is not complete until the final electoral rolls are published. It is our shared responsibility to ensure that no eligible voter's name is removed due to lack of documents or administrative errors,” he insisted.
Pilot called on party members to remain alert throughout the revision process and assist voters in resolving documentation issues, ensuring that democratic rights are both protected and strengthened.
