New Delhi, Sept 19 (NationPress) Rahul Gandhi’s close aide and Indian Overseas Congress (IOC) chief Sam Pitroda ignited a controversy on Friday by highlighting the ‘remarkable similarities’ between the people of India and its neighboring countries, including Pakistan and Bangladesh. He also emphasized the importance of ‘neighborhood diplomacy’ with struggling nations like Nepal.
Pitroda, a long-time ally of the Gandhi family, urged the government to place India’s neighbors at the forefront of its foreign policy.
In an exclusive interview with IANS, he stated, “Our foreign policy should primarily focus on our neighborhood. Can we genuinely enhance our relationships with our neighbors? They are all small countries facing challenging times.”
“Indeed, there are issues of violence and terrorism. However, at the end of the day, there exists a common gene pool in our neighborhood. I’ve visited Pakistan and felt at home. I’ve also been to Bangladesh and Nepal, and I do not feel like a stranger there. They resemble me, speak like me, appreciate my music, and enjoy my cuisine. It is essential that we learn to coexist peacefully and harmoniously,” he added.
Sam Pitroda, who gained prominence in the 1980s as a technocrat linked to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, has consistently been a trusted advisor to the Gandhi family.
