Mumbai, Dec 11 (NationPress) Union Minister Piyush Goyal stated on Thursday that the ongoing trade discussions between Indian and US officials are advancing positively; however, he emphasized that there is no set timeline for finalizing an agreement.
Addressing the visit of US Deputy Trade Representative Rick Switzer to Delhi, Goyal remarked: "We engaged in very fruitful discussions. However, I have reiterated that a deal is only concluded when both parties benefit. Negotiating with deadlines often leads to errors."
"Negotiations are moving ahead smoothly. We've had significant discussions over multiple rounds. So far, five rounds have been conducted. This visit is not part of a negotiating round; it is the first for the new US Trade Representative who joined three months ago, and we are in the process of familiarizing ourselves with each other," he explained.
India’s Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal and US Deputy Trade Representative Switzer engaged in talks regarding the proposed bilateral trade agreement on Wednesday.
The Commerce Ministry shared on X that the two sides exchanged perspectives on topics concerning India-US trade and economic relations, including the ongoing negotiations for a mutually advantageous Bilateral Trade Agreement.
Last month, Agrawal indicated that India and the US are “approaching closure” on the discussions for the initial phase of the proposed Bilateral Trade Agreement.
He informed reporters that the two nations have been conducting regular virtual discussions regarding the BTA. While no formal deadlines can be imposed, the initial stage of the trade conversations is progressing rapidly.
In November, US President Donald Trump signaled optimism about enhancing US-India relations, raising hopes that a bilateral trade agreement between the world’s largest democracies could soon be finalized.
Trump mentioned to reporters at the White House that his discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi were “going great” and hinted at a potential visit to Delhi next year.
He expressed intentions to “reduce tariffs” imposed on India “at some point,” suggesting that advancements in the trade discussions might come shortly.
Nonetheless, India has asserted that it will not compromise the interests of farmers, the dairy sector, and workers in any trade agreements it enters into with other nations.
India has commenced purchasing more oil and gas from the US as part of an effort to diminish its trade surplus with the US, which has been a focal point in prior rounds of trade discussions.
