PM Modi expressed hope that the Pope's leadership will enhance harmony and peace.
In his message to the Pope, who will take on the pontifical name of Leo XIV, PM Modi stated in a post on X, “I convey sincere congratulations and best wishes from the people of India to His Holiness Pope Leo XIV.”
The Prime Minister also reaffirmed India’s commitment to peace, stating, “His leadership of the Catholic Church emerges at a pivotal time for advancing the ideals of peace, harmony, solidarity, and service. India is dedicated to continuing dialogue and collaboration with the Holy See to further our mutual values.”
Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, also conveyed his best wishes to the new Pope, who is notably the first to be born in the United States.

American prelate Robert Francis Prevost was appointed the new Pope on Thursday. Addressing the enthusiastic crowd in Italian, the new Pope said: "Peace be with all of you."
The Chicago-born Prevost, aged 69 and a member of the Augustinian order, has served extensively in Peru and was the Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and President of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America since 2023, having been appointed by Pope Francis, who elevated him as a Cardinal.
Significantly, he is the second consecutive Pope from the Americas, following the Argentinian-born Pope Francis.
There was high anticipation regarding the identity of the new Pope, as the trademark white smoke billowed from the chimney above St. Peter's Square, signaling that the conclave of Cardinals had selected the successor to Pope Francis, who passed away last month.
Joy erupted among the clergy and laity awaiting the announcement, with all eyes on the balcony for the new head of the Roman Catholic Church, revered by the global Christian community across all denominations.
"Brothers and sisters dearest, this is the first greeting of Christ resurrected. I wish to extend a greeting of peace to reach your families, all of you, wherever you are. May peace be with you," he expressed, as reported by the BBC.
The 133 Cardinals participating in the conclave, held in the Sistine Chapel, reconvened after a lunch break following Thursday morning's inconclusive voting.
A new Pope requires a two-thirds majority, equating to 89 votes in this conclave. The average duration for recent conclaves has been three days and seven ballots, according to the BBC.
