Guwahati, Sep 15 (NationPress) Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal reflected on how a seemingly simple suggestion from Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a rally in 2016 catalyzed one of the largest tree plantation initiatives in Assam, transforming tree planting into a widespread community endeavor throughout the state.
Sonowal recounted that this event unfolded in Guwahati shortly after he had marked his first year as Chief Minister. A grand public rally had been set up to celebrate the occasion, attracting thousands eager to listen to the Prime Minister.
“The atmosphere was electric. The energy of the crowd was overwhelming, and I was seated right beside Modi ji on the stage,” Sonowal reminisced.
While another speaker was addressing the audience, the Prime Minister's gaze, as Sonowal noted, shifted to something beyond the crowd. He pointed to a distant tree and softly inquired, “What tree is that?” Sonowal identified it as the 'Krishna Chura', famous for its vibrant, fiery red flowers, which is prevalent across Assam.
“In that moment, his visionary insight became apparent,” Sonowal said.
“He immediately proposed that we should plant more Krishna Chura trees throughout the state. He envisioned Assam in full bloom, attracting visitors from around the globe to witness its splendor. It would not only enhance your identity but also boost tourism,” Sonowal reminisced.
Motivated by this suggestion, the then-Chief Minister initiated an ambitious tree plantation campaign, targeting the planting of 10 crore trees.
“During my tenure, we successfully planted 9.5 crore trees. What started as the Prime Minister's idea rapidly evolved into a people's movement,” Sonowal stated.
He noted that tree plantation gradually developed into a cultural norm in Assam, with individuals planting saplings on birthdays, during festivals, and on special occasions, adding a unique social aspect to the campaign.
“For me, this was one of the most unforgettable moments of my life,” Sonowal reflected.
“It illustrated how Narendra Modi ji’s keen observation could transform a simple idea into a visionary plan, inspiring a mass movement. It provided Assam not only with increased greenery but also a revitalized sense of identity.”
