Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 8 (NationPress) On the occasion of the 11th anniversary of the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY), Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the scheme's vital role in enhancing self-employment opportunities for the youth.
In a post on the social media platform X, he remarked, “The Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana, launched precisely 11 years ago today, has been a significant factor in nurturing self-employment among young individuals. The achievements of this initiative highlight that with the right opportunities, anyone can not only achieve self-sufficiency but also aid in the nation’s advancement.”
The PMMY was initiated on April 8, 2015, with the objective of offering collateral-free loans up to Rs 20 lakh through Member Lending Institutions such as Scheduled Commercial Banks, Non-Banking Financial Companies, and Micro Finance Institutions.
This scheme allows eligible individuals with a solid business plan for small enterprises to access loans for income-generating activities in manufacturing, trading, and service sectors, including agriculture-related ventures. The loans are divided into four categories: Shishu (up to Rs 50,000), Kishor (between Rs 50,000 and Rs 5 lakh), Tarun (between Rs 5 lakh and Rs 10 lakh), and Tarun Plus (between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 20 lakh).
The initiative has notably bolstered small businesses, handicrafts, traditional ventures, and agriculture-allied activities, many of which serve as crucial income sources for rural families.
Women entrepreneurs have particularly gained from this program, as it facilitates access to credit without requiring collateral or an extensive credit history.
To encourage successful borrowers further, the government introduced the ‘Tarun Plus’ category in 2024-25. This category provides collateral-free loans up to Rs 20 lakh to entrepreneurs who have previously received and successfully repaid loans under the Tarun category.
Moreover, the government has implemented various strategies to simplify the loan application process and ensure prompt disbursal. Platforms such as the Jan Samarth Portal have been introduced, allowing applicants to access multiple credit-linked schemes through a streamlined, user-friendly interface.
