Chennai, Dec 14 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a three-day journey to Tamil Nadu from January 13 to 15, during which he is anticipated to engage in Pongal festivities alongside farmers, as per sources from the state BJP.
This visit, positioned just before the 2026 Assembly elections, is perceived by the party as a significant outreach initiative targeting rural voters and aiming to strengthen cultural ties within the region.
Senior leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) mentioned that the visit is strategically planned around Pongal, marking the first occasion where the Prime Minister is expected to celebrate the traditional harvest festival with farmers in Tamil Nadu.
According to party insiders, this outreach is designed to enhance the BJP’s connection with rural communities while highlighting its commitment to Tamil culture and heritage.
The preliminary schedule indicates that Prime Minister Modi is likely to participate in the closing ceremony of Kashi Tamil Sangamam 4.0 in Rameswaram, an initiative focused on reinforcing civilisational and cultural bonds between Tamil Nadu and Kashi.
He is also expected to attend the final event of Thamizhagam Thalai Nimira Thamizhanin Payanam, a statewide outreach initiative spearheaded by BJP Tamil Nadu president Nainar Nagenthran, set to occur in Pudukkottai.
“As the Assembly elections approach, the Prime Minister’s involvement in Pongal festivities with farmers will convey a powerful political and cultural statement,” asserted a senior BJP leader.
This visit is anticipated to showcase the party's emphasis on agricultural concerns while reinforcing its dedication to Tamil traditions and sentiments.
The proposed tour is also expected to align with significant developments concerning alliances.
According to sources, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Tamil Nadu is likely to take tangible form before Pongal, with various regional parties anticipated to formally join the coalition. During his visit, PM Modi is expected to convene meetings with NDA leaders to finalize electoral strategies and coordination for the upcoming Assembly elections.
The BJP is currently in discussions with several parties, including the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK), and expelled AIADMK leader O. Panneerselvam.
Insiders indicate that efforts are underway to complete alliance negotiations before the Prime Minister’s visit.
Furthermore, sources have reported that V.K. Sasikala, a close associate of former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, is in talks with the NDA. Although she is currently barred from contesting elections, it is expected that she will contribute to the success of the alliance.
In parallel, BJP State president Nainar Nagenthran is in Delhi for discussions with central leadership as preparations ramp up for the Prime Minister’s visit and the finalization of alliance and organizational matters in Tamil Nadu.
