Patna, May 29 (NationPress) In a significant initiative aimed at enhancing infrastructure and connectivity in eastern India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to lay the foundation stone for the second phase of the Varanasi-Gaya-Ranchi-Kolkata Expressway (NH-319B) this Thursday during his visit to Bihar.
This expressway is an integral part of the Bharatmala Project, a comprehensive infrastructure program designed to revolutionize road travel and stimulate economic activity across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal.
Stretching over 690 kilometres and featuring a width of 36 metres, this will be Bihar's inaugural six-lane greenfield expressway.
Beginning at Barhauli near the Varanasi Ring Road in Uttar Pradesh, the route will pass through Kaimur, Rohtas, Aurangabad, and Gaya in Bihar before entering Jharkhand and ultimately reaching Kolkata.
This expressway is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Varanasi and Kolkata, cutting it from 12–14 hours down to just 6–7 hours.
The total projected expenditure for the project stands at Rs 35,000 crore, with approximately Rs 5,994 crore designated for Bihar and Rs 1,200 crore allocated specifically for Gaya district.
In Gaya, the expressway will traverse through densely forested and historically Naxal-affected areas, impacting 29 revenue villages (mauzas) across 33.5 kilometres.
The pathway encompasses regions such as Anwar Salaiya, Barha, Chhakarbandha, Tarchua, and Dhakpahari, which were previously challenging to access due to insurgency.
A construction firm from Rajasthan has initiated the establishment of a work centre in Chhakarbandha forest along with a project office in Baseta to manage operations.
“Only a decade ago, even common individuals hesitated to visit Chhakarbandha due to Naxalite influence. Today, this expressway symbolizes development reclaiming such areas,” remarked a local resident, Rahul Manjhi, while expressing disappointment over the absence of an interchange point at Chhakarbandha.
Deepa Manjhi, the MLA from Imamganj, applauded the project as a transformative force for traffic management and economic advancement.
“This expressway will enhance inter-city connectivity, alleviate traffic congestion, and promote freight movement. It will catalyze industrial development, leading to job creation and economic growth,” she stated.
