New Delhi, Aug 15 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday called on researchers to transform India into a center of medical self-reliance by achieving autonomy in medicines and health innovation.
During his Independence Day speech at the Red Fort, he urged entrepreneurs to secure patents for new drugs and medical technologies.
This initiative will ensure that India not only fulfills its own healthcare requirements but also plays a significant role in enhancing global well-being, establishing itself as a leader in medical self-reliance and innovation, PM Modi stated.
He noted India's increasing prowess in domestic pharmaceutical advancements, stressing the importance of developing new medicines, vaccines, and life-saving treatments completely within India.
Taking inspiration from India's response to Covid-19, where indigenous vaccines and platforms like CoWin saved millions globally, the Prime Minister motivated the nation to further this spirit of innovation.
PM Modi emphasized India’s reputation as the pharmacy of the world and highlighted the urgent need for enhanced investment in research and development. He questioned, “Shouldn’t we be the ones providing the best and most affordable medicines for the welfare of humanity?”
The Prime Minister also issued a crucial public health warning, encouraging citizens to address the escalating crisis of obesity.
“We must avoid becoming overweight...,” he remarked, advocating for a nationwide transformation in lifestyle and eating habits.
PM Modi pointed out that obesity is becoming a significant health issue across India, exacerbated by sedentary lifestyles and excessive oil consumption.
“Every family in our country should be alarmed that obesity is increasingly becoming a major concern. Soon, one in three people will be obese. We must prevent this. I propose that every family should buy 10 percent less cooking oil and use 10 percent less oil,” he stated.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the vital role of sports in fostering a healthier and more self-assured generation.
