New Delhi, Feb 24 (NationPress) In a significant initiative to tackle India’s escalating obesity problem, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has designated 10 notable personalities from diverse sectors to spearhead a nationwide effort against weight challenges, following his appeal for action during the monthly radio program, Mann Ki Baat. This initiative has garnered widespread commendation from politicians across various parties.

While speaking to the press, BJP MP Anurag Thakur expressed robust endorsement for the campaign, highlighting the importance of individual accountability in addressing obesity.

“At the opportune moment, Prime Minister Modi brings attention to such critical societal matters. By appointing new community representatives as brand ambassadors, he has showcased his concern regarding the rising obesity rates. It’s not merely about diet and exercise; it’s about nurturing a healthier lifestyle to alleviate pressure on our healthcare system,” said Thakur.

He underscored the direct correlation between decreasing obesity rates and enhancing productivity, benefiting both individuals and the nation.

Shiv Sena leader Manisha Kayande, reflecting on a recent conversation with PM Modi, emphasized his commitment to personal health.

“A robust nation prioritizes the well-being of its citizens. Modi ji's initiatives advocating for regular health screenings, physical activity, and yoga demonstrate his dedication to a healthier India. Obesity should be confronted with the same seriousness as any other illness,” she stated, commending the involvement of numerous influential figures in this initiative.

Mahesh Tapse, the chief spokesperson for NCP, also noted the alarming increase in obesity rates in India.

“India has now overtaken the US as the global leader in obesity due to changing lifestyles. PM Modi’s campaign is a proactive step, particularly since he has engaged Opposition leaders as well. A healthy populace is vital for a productive nation,” Tapse remarked, suggesting that the Prime Minister should also consider addressing the overall fitness of the country.

In the meantime, Omar Abdullah, the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, responded positively to the PM’s appeal, expressing his willingness to support the campaign.

Omar Abdullah even proposed 10 additional influential figures to advance the message.

The campaign, which was initially launched with PM Modi’s call to reduce oil consumption by 10 percent, has now evolved into a community-wide initiative, with leaders from all sectors joining the cause.

CM Omar Abdullah further put forth 10 names, including rhythmic gymnast Palak Kour Bijral.

Palak Kour Bijral expressed her enthusiasm for being nominated by CM Omar Abdullah in PM Modi’s obesity awareness campaign.

“It’s a privilege that the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah sir, has included me among the ten individuals he has nominated as part of PM Modi’s obesity awareness initiative. This presents a tremendous opportunity to elevate awareness on how we can confront obesity and embrace healthier lifestyles,” she remarked.

Palak intends to advance the initiative by nominating ten additional individuals to broaden the outreach.

“The essence of combating obesity lies in awareness—recognizing how to tackle it, adopting a healthier lifestyle, and understanding the roadmap ahead,” she emphasized.

For Palak, the journey begins with physical activity.

“Obesity arises from overeating, and the best way to address it is through fitness. I encourage everyone to engage in some form of physical activity—start with walking if you haven’t been active, or challenge yourself to hit the gym. Activities like gymnastics, which I practice, are excellent for overall physical development,” she stated.

Palak also stressed the importance of nutrition.

“Consume healthy food, steer clear of junk and fried items. These are the two fundamental pillars—physical activity and healthy eating—that can assist in combating obesity,” she concluded.

Reflecting on her own journey, Palak shared how she transitioned from Jammu and Kashmir to Delhi and earned recognition from the President of India.

“I am exceedingly grateful for the support I’ve received from Omar Abdullah and for the chance to be part of this campaign. Now, I aim to move this forward by raising awareness through social media and by inspiring the children I coach in my academy,” she added.

Palak is dedicated to utilizing her platform to promote the message of combating obesity, sharing insights on fitness and nutrition, and empowering others to lead healthier, happier lives.
