Kolkata, June 3 (NationPress) A police constable from the Chamta police camp in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district reportedly attempted to end his life using his service revolver.
The constable has been named Bibhas Ghosh, and this incident took place on Monday night while he was on duty in the 10-mile area, which falls under the Gopalnagar Police Station's jurisdiction. He is a member of the second battalion of the state armed police.
His fellow officers quickly transported him to a local hospital, Bongaon Sub-Divisional Hospital.
However, as his health began to decline, he was rapidly moved to the state-operated S.S.K. M. Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata early Tuesday morning.
He is currently receiving treatment there, and his condition remains quite critical. After his initial transfer to Bongaon Sub-Divisional Hospital, senior police officials, including District Police Superintendent Dinesh Kumar, visited the hospital to check on his status.
Initially, when the gunshot was heard and the constable was discovered in a pool of blood, there was widespread concern among his colleagues that he had been shot by someone else. However, it was later confirmed that he had shot himself, according to police sources.
The constable's family has informed authorities that Ghosh has been undergoing treatment for neurological issues for an extended period.
A thorough investigation has commenced regarding this incident. Even if it appears to be a suicide attempt, which is highly likely, authorities will probe into the circumstances that led him to take such a drastic action, stated a district police official.
In a similar incident earlier this year, a Kolkata Police constable responsible for the security of a city court judge was found dead within the court premises. Investigations revealed that the late constable, Gopal Kumar Nath, had also taken his life by shooting himself with his service weapon.
