Key Takeaways
Kolkata, April 20 (NationPress) A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) soldier, deployed in West Bengal for the Assembly elections, attempted to take his own life in Murshidabad district on Monday.
Authorities reported that the soldier was saved from the vicinity of the Shaktipur police station located in the Rejinagar Assembly constituency. He is currently receiving medical care at a local hospital.
A group of Central Force members stationed in Shaktipur for election duties had been lodged at Bazarsau Higher Secondary School. Reports suggest that the head constable of the CRPF’s 142nd Battalion was the one who tried to commit suicide at this location.
The soldier, who is originally from a southern Indian state, had previously performed election duties in Assam just a month prior. Local sources revealed that he shot himself with his service rifle, resulting in one bullet striking his left shoulder. Colleagues managed to rescue the injured soldier.
The wounded soldier is now under treatment at Berhampore Medical College and Hospital. Medical staff indicated that while his condition is stable, he will remain under observation for the time being.
In another incident, a Central Force soldier on election duty passed away under suspicious circumstances in Falta, located in the South 24 Parganas district, on the night of April 14. The deceased, identified as Kanak Koch, served as a constable with the Indo-Tibetan Border Police. Initial police investigations suggest he fell from a staircase, sustaining severe injuries that led to his death.
Just two days later, another tragic incident occurred when a Border Security Force soldier died in a fire at the 77th Battalion camp in Hingalganj, North 24 Parganas district. The deceased, Jyotiram Singh, held the position of Assistant Sub-Inspector. He entered a fuel storage area when the fire erupted, and the flames spread rapidly, preventing him from escaping.
