Imphal, Feb 13 (NationPress) In a distressing case of fratricide, a CRPF jawan on Thursday opened fire, killing two fellow soldiers instantly and injuring eight others in Imphal West District of Manipur before taking his own life with his service weapon, according to officials.

A police spokesperson reported that the tragic event unfolded within a CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) camp located in Lamsang, Imphal West District, where a jawan began indiscriminate firing.

“The shooting resulted in the immediate death of two CRPF jawans while eight others sustained injuries. Subsequently, the perpetrator also committed suicide using his service firearm,” the official stated.

The injured personnel were promptly transported to a hospital in Imphal. All of the affected jawans were part of the F-120 unit of the paramilitary force.

High-ranking officials from both the Police and CRPF have arrived at the scene, and a comprehensive investigation has been initiated.

Authorities have not yet determined the motive behind this tragic event. Notably, this incident occurred mere hours after President Droupadi Murmu announced President’s Rule in the conflict-ridden state of Manipur, leading to the suspension of the “60-member state assembly”.

As a component of the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF), thousands of CRPF jawans were deployed in Manipur following the outbreak of ethnic violence on May 3, 2023.

Earlier on Thursday, the outgoing Inspector General (IG) of CRPF for Manipur and Nagaland sector, Vipul Kumar, along with IG designate Rajendra Narayan Dash, met with Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at the Raj Bhavan.

“The senior officials updated the Governor on the deployment and operational activities of the CRPF in the area,” an official from Raj Bhavan reported.
