Kolkata, Jan 18 (NationPress) An individual, who fired at a police vehicle while being transported back to prison from the court in the Goalpokhar region of West Bengal's North Dinajpur district, was killed during a police encounter on Saturday.
According to Police Department sources, the suspect, Sajjak Alam, was captured in Chopra, North Dinajpur district on Saturday morning while attempting to flee to Bangladesh.
When the investigating officers apprehended him, Alam made a frantic effort to escape, prompting the police to open fire.
Alam, who suffered three gunshot wounds, collapsed. He was swiftly transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries around 8 a.m. It has come to light that Alam was previously implicated in a murder case.
On January 15, while being returned from a district court in Islampur to a correction facility in Raiganj, Alam had unexpectedly fired at the accompanying officers.
Taking advantage of the severe injuries sustained by two escorting officers, Nilkanata Sarkar and Deben Baishya, Alam fled the scene and had been on the run since.
Concerns were raised regarding how Alam, as an under-trial prisoner, had access to a firearm. Insiders from the state police revealed that an accomplice of Alam, Abdul Sheikh, is still at large, prompting a significant manhunt.
Interestingly, on Friday evening, Rajeev Kumar, the Director General of West Bengal Police, stated: "We will provide a robust response. Our police forces ensure the safety of the public. However, if anyone opens fire at the police, we will retaliate fourfold."
