Kolkata, Feb 2 (NationPress) On Monday, the Kolkata Police apprehended ten individuals in relation to a violent confrontation between two factions in the Golpark region of south Kolkata the previous night, according to officials.
The individuals taken into custody have been identified as Bobby Hela (28), Arjun Mallick (29), Sk. Bacchu (38), Mukesh Paswan (32), Rabin Das (29), Sujan Haldar (19), Raj Haldar (24), Gopal Sarkar (29), Ajay Haldar (29), and Sandip Naskar (18).
All of them are set to be presented before a Kolkata court later today.
As per police reports, the unrest ignited on Kakulia Road near Golpark, falling under the jurisdiction of the Rabindra Sarobar police station. Allegedly, troublemakers went on a rampage, damaging police vehicles and motorcycles owned by local residents.
Initial investigations indicate that the clash transpired during a picnic at a local club in the Panchanantala vicinity close to Golpark. Police and local sources reported that approximately 100 to 150 assailants, many with concealed faces, targeted the area. Gunshots were allegedly fired, crude bombs were thrown, and sharp weapons were wielded during the melee. Bricks were hurled, inciting panic among locals.
Officers recovered bullet casings and bomb fragments from the scene.
At least two individuals sustained injuries during the incident. Ganesh Das reportedly suffered a gunshot wound to the chest, while another, Sanat Singh, incurred a head injury. Both are currently receiving treatment at SSKM Hospital.
Residents in the area claimed that the assault was orchestrated by a gang led by a man known as Sona Pappu. They further alleged that this group had committed acts of violence in the region during last year’s Ganesh Puja. Locals expressed outrage over inadequate security, particularly since the Rabindra Sarobar police station is situated nearby.
Trinamool Congress councillor Baishwanor Chattopadhyay arrived at the site following the incident but was encircled by protesting residents. He later indicated that the unrest stemmed from a conflict during a picnic and asserted that the situation had been brought under control.
Senior police officials, including Deputy Commissioner of Police Bholanath Pandey, surveyed the area. Pandey remarked that a thorough investigation is underway and that CCTV footage from the vicinity is being scrutinized. Police conducted search operations in the area and neighboring Kasba, leading to the arrests of ten people.
