Kolkata, Feb 3 (NationPress) Four additional individuals have been apprehended by the Kolkata Police in relation to a recent confrontation between rival factions in the Golpark region of south Kolkata, bringing the cumulative number of arrests to 14 since the incident on Sunday night. However, the main suspect, Biswajit Poddar, also known as Sona Pappu, is still evading capture, according to police reports on Tuesday.
The violent clash erupted late on Sunday evening on Kakulia Road within the jurisdiction of the Rabindra Sarobar police station. In the wake of the unrest, local residents have consistently implicated Sona Pappu and his crew, claiming that his gang sparked the violence. Despite the arrests, the accused have reportedly gone underground following the incident, as per sources.
The newly appointed Police Commissioner of Kolkata, Supratim Sarkar, issued a stern warning on Monday, stating that no individuals involved in the violence would escape accountability.
Authorities revealed that Sona Pappu has a history of involvement in various violent incidents, including a murder case. He previously operated a gold business, which earned him the moniker ‘Sona,’ and is currently suspected of engaging in real estate dealings in the Kasba area.
In connection with the Sunday night clash, three FIRs have been filed at the Rabindra Sarobar police station, including a suo motu case regarding an attack on a police vehicle. Ten suspects were arrested on Sunday night and have been remanded to police custody until February 9. Following further investigations, four additional arrests were made late on Monday.
Among those detained, Bablu Sau, known as Chini, and Indrajit Maji, also called Chhoto Babu, were arrested in one case, both hailing from the Kasba police station area. In another case, Jayanta Naskar, alias Sonu, from the Anandapur police station area, and Debashish Mandal, known as Bhutu, from the Lake police station area, were also apprehended.
According to police and local sources, the chaos began at approximately 8:30 p.m. on Sunday during a club picnic at Panchanantala near Golpark. The altercation reportedly occurred between supporters of local businessman Bapi Halder and the gang led by Sona Pappu. Residents assert that the latter group was attempting to assert dominance over the area, specifically targeting Bapi.
It is claimed that around 100-150 miscreants, many of whom had their faces concealed, invaded the area. Reports indicate that there were instances of gunfire and the throwing of crude bombs, alongside the use of sharp weapons. Police vehicles and local residents' motorcycles were vandalized, and bricks were hurled during the chaos. Later that evening, police recovered bullet casings and bomb debris from the scene.
