Kolkata, Jan 15 (NationPress) Two policemen suffered serious injuries when a group of attackers opened fire on a police van transporting two suspects back to prison from a court session in the Goalpokhar region of West Bengal's North Dinajpur district on Wednesday.

The injured officers have been taken to a local hospital where they are receiving medical attention. They have been named as Nilkanta Sarkar and Deben Baishya, but no updates regarding their health have been disclosed by either the district police or the medical facility.

This incident has sparked unrest in the area, leading to heightened tensions.

Witnesses reported that the officers had taken the two suspects to a local district court in Islampur on Wednesday afternoon. After the court proceedings, they were transporting the accused back to the Raiganj Correctional Home. As the police vehicle approached the Panjipara crossing in Goalpokhar, it momentarily slowed down, prompting the waiting assailants to open fire on the van.
