Jammu, July 20 (NationPress) The J&K Police intervened on Sunday during the Congress protest march advocating for the restoration of statehood to the Union Territory. The party's president, Tariq Hameed Karra, and All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary, G.A. Mir, were taken into custody for an hour at a local police station before being released.

JKPCC president Tariq Hameed Karra, along with AICC general secretary G.A. Mir and several senior party leaders, spearheaded the 'Jammu Chalo' march in Jammu city to press for the urgent restoration of complete statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.

A spokesperson for the party stated that the march, conducted under the slogan 'Hamari Riyasat Hamara Haq', represented the culmination of an extensive campaign that has reached various regions of J&K in recent weeks.

“The objective of today’s protest march is to bring attention to public grievances regarding the ongoing lack of democratic rights and the diminishing constitutional assurances following the abrogation of Article 370 and the bifurcation of the former state in 2019,” he remarked.

Congress leaders, joined by numerous party workers, marched through Jammu city advocating for the restoration of democratic institutions, statehood, and the dignity of the residents of J&K.

However, the protest faced a brief interruption when the J&K Police detained the leaders, who were taken to the Police Line in the Gandhi Nagar area, where they remained for approximately an hour before their release.

Following the incident, the Congress party expressed on X: “It is disgraceful for the J&K Police, acting under the control of the central government, to have detained JKPCC President @TariqKarra along with AICC General Secretary @GAMIR_INC and hundreds of Congress workers in Jammu while they were advocating for the full statehood of Jammu & Kashmir.

“Just yesterday, the JKPCC office in Srinagar was sealed to suppress a peaceful protest. These undemocratic and tyrannical actions by the Modi government blatantly deny our fundamental rights.

“We will persist in our struggle against this oppressive regime!”

K.C. Venugopal criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the police action against party leaders in Jammu. He stated on X, “Did PM Modi mislead Parliament about granting statehood for J&K?

“If not, why has the J&K Police arrested JKPCC President Tariq Hameed Karra and other Congress leaders?

“Why was the PCC Office in Srinagar sealed yesterday and our party workers prevented from peacefully protesting for statehood? In the next Parliament session, the INDIA alliance will demand immediate restoration of full statehood in J&K. This farce must not continue any longer.”

A similar protest march on Saturday was also prohibited by police in Srinagar when Congress leaders attempted to march to the city center, Lal Chowk.
