Was Sharad Pawar Excluded from Decisions on Sunetra's Promotion?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Baramati, January 31 (NationPress) In light of the swift political changes in Maharashtra following the tragic loss of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar in an air crash, NCP leader Sharad Pawar revealed on Saturday that he was not consulted about Sunetra Pawar’s rise to the position of Deputy CM. He also indicated that the consolidation of the two NCP factions was nearing completion, with Ajit Pawar expected to officially announce it on February 12.
“I have not had conversations with Sunetra Pawar about this matter. I found out about the swearing-in ceremony through the news this morning,” he mentioned during a press briefing.
Regarding the merger of the two NCP factions, he affirmed that constructive discussions on reunification occurred between Ajit Pawar and Jayant Patil and asserted that the reunion was nearly finalized, with the Deputy CM poised to make a formal announcement on February 12.
Sharad Pawar emphasized that although discussions were ongoing, he was not directly involved in the negotiations, which were spearheaded by Ajit Pawar and Jayant Patil.
“It was Ajit Dada’s desire for both NCPs to unite, and we shared that aspiration,” stated the senior Pawar.
He noted that Ajit Pawar's unexpected passing in an air crash has interrupted these merger discussions. The future direction will now rely on the leaders from both factions.
Sharad Pawar underscored that the roadmap was clear, mentioning that for four months, efforts were made to reunite the party. However, with the leader who initiated these discussions no longer present, the process encounters a significant hurdle.
“We cannot revive the one who has departed. Confronting the current situation is challenging, and someone must assume Ajit Pawar's duties,” he concluded.
He also expressed that he had no updates regarding the possible inclusion of Sunetra Pawar or Rohit Pawar into the ministry, mentioning that the demand for Sunetra Pawar's leadership originates from her own faction.
When queried about Sunetra Pawar’s designation, Sharad Pawar distanced himself from the decision. He further stated, “The party (NCP) is theirs to manage. Leaders like Praful Patel and Sunil Tatkare have the authority to make these choices, and I will refrain from commenting on their internal decisions. Our political paths diverge. While the family stands united in sorrow, politics remains distinct.”
Reflecting on Ajit Pawar’s legacy and career, Sharad Pawar paid a heartfelt homage. “Ajit was a competent leader who maintained strong connections with the populace. He had a deep insight into the issues faced by the people and worked diligently to achieve justice. His days began at dawn; had he been with us today, he wouldn’t be at home—he would be out in the field working.”
He described this loss as a tremendous blow to both the family and the state.
