Bhopal, Dec 28 (NationPress) A court presided over by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in Bhopal has handed down a sentence of five years of Rigorous Imprisonment to a former Postal Assistant due to his involvement in a fraud case amounting to Rs 13.85 lakh, according to an official announcement. The verdict was issued on Saturday, with the court also imposing a penalty of Rs 14,000 on the defendant, Rajnish Tiwari, who was employed at the Lashkar Head Post Office in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, the CBI reported.
The case was initiated on April 20, 2022, following a formal complaint from the Senior Superintendent of Post Office in Gwalior.
In this complaint, it was alleged that Rajnish Tiwari, during his tenure as a Postal Assistant at the Lashkar Head Post Office, committed acts of cheating and criminal breach of trust by unlawfully redirecting funds totaling Rs 13,85,496 back in 2020.
The fraudulent activities involved manipulating electronic records and details related to 17 Recurring Deposit (RD) accounts belonging to various clients within the Finacle Internet Module of the Post Office, and subsequently utilizing Internet banking for the transactions.
The funds were transferred from these manipulated RD accounts into three regular/savings accounts that were opened without proper authorization, as well as into two savings accounts held in his name or jointly, from which he later withdrew the misappropriated funds using stolen ATM cards from the Lashkar Head Post Office.
The investigation concluded with Tiwari's conviction and sentencing.
On a related note, the CBI also apprehended a Senior Secretariat Assistant working at a Kendriya Vidyalaya in Dewas, Madhya Pradesh, on Friday for accepting a bribe of Rs 60,000 from a contractor providing security manpower services.
The accused, Ranjan Bharti, solicited the bribe to expedite the approval of bills that amounted to Rs 3.84 lakh related to security and manpower services. Following the arrest, he was presented before a Special Court, which ordered him to be held in police custody for three days.
