Hyderabad, Nov 12 (NationPress) Actor Prakash Raj appeared before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Wednesday as part of the ongoing inquiry into the alleged promotion of online betting applications. The SIT officials took the actor's statement at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) office.
Upon exiting the CID office, Prakash Raj informed the media that he had promoted an app back in 2016, believing it to be a gaming application. He expressed that once he realized it was a betting app, he halted his promotion. He also mentioned that betting was prohibited starting in 2017.
"Betting apps are detrimental. They ruin the lives of many young people," he asserted. "Whether we promote them knowingly or unknowingly, it’s unacceptable. I apologize for that," he added.
On Tuesday, actor Vijay Deverakonda also met with the SIT, where he provided information regarding the payments and commissions received from betting apps.
The Telangana government established the SIT in March to investigate various cases related to online betting platforms.
This questioning follows a series of arrests made by the SIT across six locations in Punjab, Gujarat, and Rajasthan, as part of a coordinated operation with the CID. Eight illegal betting organizers were apprehended during this operation.
Prakash Raj and Deverakonda were among 29 celebrities accused by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in July-August for promoting illegal betting platforms.
The investigation stems from multiple FIRs filed in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, involving a variety of individuals, including actors, YouTubers, and social media influencers.
They received summons from the agency under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
After attending the ED on July 30, Prakash Raj stated that the matter dated back to 2016, asserting that he did not accept any money.
Deverakonda insisted that he only promoted legal skill-based gaming applications, not illegal betting platforms.
Actors Rana Daggubati and Manchi Lakshmi also appeared before the ED.
