Bhubaneswar, May 30 (NationPress) Former MLA and prominent BJP leader Prasanna Patanayak has sadly passed away at the age of 77 on Friday. He was receiving treatment for age-related health issues at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar.
Patanayak made history as the first BJP MLA to be elected to the Odisha Assembly from the Kamakhyanagar constituency in the Dhenkanal district, serving from 1980 to 1985.
Prior to his tenure with the BJP, Patanayak was elected to the Odisha Assembly as a member of the Janata Party from 1977 to 1980 and later from the Janata Dal for Kamakhyanagar from 1990 to 1995.
He represented the Kamakhyanagar Assembly three times consecutively from 1977 to 1990. Patanayak was also instrumental in establishing over 15 educational institutions in Kamakhyanagar and Bhuban, which significantly enhanced his popularity.
His legacy includes the founding of Kamakhyanagar College and the construction of the 'Sarangadhar Setu' and 'Baji Rout Setu' bridges over the River Brahmani at Bhuban in Dhenkanal.
The last rites for Patanayak will take place after his body is transported from Bhubaneswar to his home in Kamakhyanagar, and then to Puri Swargadwar for cremation.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and various senior party leaders expressed their heartfelt condolences following Patanayak's demise. “I am profoundly saddened by the loss of Prasanna Patanayak, a dedicated leader in Odisha's political landscape and the first BJP MLA from the state. His unparalleled contributions in education, social service, and party organization will be etched in our memories. This loss is irreparable for the state. I offer my deepest condolences and pray for peace for his soul and strength for his family during this trying time,” remarked CM Majhi.

His impact on education and public service is profoundly felt in Kamakhyanagar and beyond. His commitment to uplifting communities and shaping Odisha's political scene will be remembered.
