The 82-year-old artist had been receiving treatment at the state-run S.S.K.M. Medical College and Hospital for an extended period.
A medical board was constituted to aid in his recovery.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee personally took steps to guarantee that Mukhopadhyay received top-notch medical care, visiting S.S.K.M. recently to check on his condition.
Despite the dedicated efforts of the medical team, Mukhopadhyay could not be saved and passed away at 10 a.m. in the hospital.
Interestingly, Mukhopadhyay's passing aligns with the death anniversaries of two other iconic figures from the state's music scene, Sandhya Mukhopadhyay and Bappi Lahiri.
Born on June 25, 1942, in Barisal, which is now part of Bangladesh, Mukhopadhyay was raised in Chinsurah, West Bengal, after his family relocated post-partition. His father was a schoolteacher.
From an early age, he demonstrated a keen interest in music, composing the melody for a folk song penned by Mangalacharan Chattopadhyay when he was just 12 years old.
His love for the Bengali language shone through in songs like Ami Banglai Gan gai (I sing in Bengali), while his fondness for folk music was evident in pieces such as Ami dhan katar gan gai (I sing the song of harvesting paddy).
The Chief Minister expressed her sorrow over Mukhopadhyay's demise in a message, stating, "I met the late singer at the hospital a few days ago. His passing is a profound loss for the music community of West Bengal. I extend my deepest sympathies to Pratul Mukhopadhyay's family."
